AVITECTURE'S EXPERTISE MAKES A SUCCESS OF HUGE SKYLIGHT INSTALLATION

The new addition to Calvert High School in Prince Frederick, Md., celebrates the sun, inviting daylight into virtually every corner of its multi-use media center. The addition features huge skylights that are 31 to 41 ft above the floor, more than 35 ft long, and pitched at a 16-deg angle. The skylights span 17,000 sq ft.

http://www.csemag.com/single-article/window-shades-offer-energy-savings/5960de403e6b3374e826f11d57671359.html

Lutron "meet-in-the-middle" skylight shades produce dramatic effects and help the school make the most of the daylight in the space while overcoming design challenges. The shading system was custom designed to fit into the skylight assembly and offers five preset configurations that can be quickly recalled at the touch of a button, allowing the right amount of daylight into the space for any situation or activity.

"The shades open and close silently, and move in total unison. It's awe-inspiring. The area is large and dramatic, and when the shades move, you completely change the experience of the space," said Ran Ilkovitch, SEI Design Group, Albany, N.Y.

One of greatest benefits of the school's new shades comes in the form of energy savings. The skylight shades allow for varying openness levels to control heat and reduce operating costs. In the closed position the shades increase space flexibility, enabling the space to be used as a media center and projection facility at any time during the day.

By using thermal imaging, installer Avitecture Inc., Sterling, Va., estimated that closing the skylight shades in the summer will reduce heat gain by 10% to 30% and subsequently reduce air conditioning costs. Alternately, by opening the shades in colder months, the school can take advantage of the thermal heat gain to reduce heating costs.

COMMERCIAL INTEGRATOR MAGAZINE COMPLIMENTS AVITECTURE

Commercial Integrator, August 2012

Avitecture is one of those integrators that has been around forever — 40 years, to be precise — and is structured such that it will always be around. One might expect a fourdecade-old integration firm to struggle with AV/IT convergence, but Avitecture reports that 25 percent of its projects in 2011 include IT solutions. One might expect that with its close proximity to Washington, D.C., the firm would rely on the government market, but its projects are well distributed through nine vertical markets. Painting Avitecture as “solid” probably doesn’t pay proper respect to its impressive portfolio of high-profile installations, but it probably makes some of those projects possible.

ON VIRGINIA'S CROOKED ROAD, MOUNTAIN MUSIC LIGHTS THE WAY

New York Times, May 20, 2011
By Sara Wildman

IT starts with a well-worn fiddle, held in equally well-worn hands above a tapping black cowboy boot. Then in comes the banjo, plucked with steel finger picks, followed by the autoharp, the mandolin, the percussive beat of an upright bass. Another banjo grabs the melody, and suddenly the room is bursting with knee-slapping, country-porch music. A man in a crisp checked shirt gets up and starts to dance, bouncing out a complicated bumbumBAM bumbumBAM with his feet, moving as smoothly as a Martha Graham dancer, hitting the floor on the downbeat.
